19TH-CENTURY FOLK ART "EQUESTRIAN" NEEDLEPOINT PORTRAIT

Sale price$5,500.00

A charming 19th-century folk art needlepoint depicting a young rider on horseback accompanied by a loyal dog, framed beneath its original églomisé glass surround. Hand stitched in wool and silk threads on canvas, the composition reflects the sentimental equestrian and pastoral subjects popular in Victorian era American decorative arts. Similar needlework pictures and reverse painted glass frames appeared in American homes throughout the mid to late 1800s as prized examples of domestic craftsmanship and folk decoration.
