19TH-CENTURY AMERICAN “PROCESSION” WALLPAPER BANDBOX PANEL

Sale price$5,500.00

This framed 19th-century wallpaper bandbox panel depicts a lively American village procession with figures, horses, and wagons moving through a pastoral landscape rendered in striking indigo and sepia tones. Originally part of a wallpaper covered bandbox made from pasteboard or thin bentwood, pieces like this transformed practical storage objects into richly decorative examples of early American folk art. Similar scenic wallpaper imagery appeared on 19th century bandboxes and domestic papers inspired by printed European wallpapers, with related examples preserved in collections such as the Shelburne Museum and Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.
  • Medium: Pasteboard, Block-Printed, Wood Frame
