19TH-CENTURY AMERICAN “GRAND CANAL” WALLPAPER BANDBOX PANEL

Sale price$5,500.00

This framed 19th-Century Wallpaper Bandbox panel depicts a lively canal scene with bridges, boats, and figures along the Erie, or “Grand Canal,” reflecting America’s fascination with the canal system following the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. Originally constructed from pasteboard or thin bentwood and covered in printed wallpaper, bandboxes transformed everyday storage objects into highly decorative pieces of American folk art. Related “Grand Canal” wallpaper imagery appears in collections including the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, where similar canal scenes were used on period bandboxes celebrating New York’s expanding waterways and trade.
