This 19th-Century American Folk Art Tinsel Painting features a vibrant still life of fruit including pineapple, grapes, pomegranate, and citrus against a cream ground. Tinsel paintings were a 19th-century art form where reverse-painted glass is layered over metallic foil to create luminous, dimensional imagery. These shimmering works were designed to sparkle under candle and gaslight in Victorian-era parlors. The largest collection of tinsel paintings can be found at the American Folk Art Museum in New York.
