19TH-CENTURY AMERICAN CALLIGRAPHY DRAWING OF HORSES

Sale price$9,500.00

This 19th-century American calligraphic drawing transforms two horses into flowing compositions of looping pen strokes, reflecting the influence of Spencerian penmanship, the ornamental script style widely taught in American schools during the late 19th century. Executed in ink on paper, works like this emerged from a folk art tradition in which penmen adapted cursive flourishes into elaborate animal forms, particularly horses and birds. Related Spencerian horse drawings have appeared in collections and exhibitions at institutions including the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and Sotheby’s.
